About Us
The Democratic Woman’s Club was founded in 1958 by women leaders in Richmond. Many were wives of elected officials. Historic papers regarding the organization have recently been contributed to the Virginia Historical Society.
In the 80s as gender-related organizations began to demise, the DWC voted to admit male members and the name was changed to The Democratic Club of Metro Richmond.
The Club has always performed a unique function as the only broad-based organization with members from the entire Richmond metropolitan region. DCMR sponsors forums on Virginia and U. S. government issues. Informational meetings have often brought speakers on such topics as campaign finance reform, expected matters to come before the Virginia General Assembly and, following legislative sessions, results of the General Assembly.
Candidates from all levels have spoken at meetings of the club which are generally opened to the public as an educational service to the community.
Fund raising took on a new importance when the club became registered as a political action committee in recent years.
Social events have been a mainstay of DCMR that has in many Democratic gubernatorial administrations held a holiday party at the Governor’s Mansion.
DCMR activities will gear up following the 2008 session of the Virginia General Assembly. With Presidential and Congressional elections in 2008, DCMR plans an eventful year.
